Salford’s local pilot is focused on working with Children and young people aged 5-18 in out-of-school settings.

The pilot work in Salford is supported by borough wide partners who sit on the steering group, this is made up of; Salford City Council (Public Health, Health Improvement, Youth Service), Salford Youth Alliance, Beyond Empower, Salford Sports Network and local voluntary organisation Salford CVS.

As part of Salford’s Local Pilot, Beyond Empower were commissioned to coordinate a project at Oakwood Academy to better connect disabled children and young people attending and local community-based activity providers.

Disabled children and young people are advised to be active for 20 minutes per day and although activity provision in special education needs schools tends to be quite good, this isn’t always replicated beyond educational provision, reflected by the inactivity levels of disabled adults being twice the rate of non-disabled adults.

By bridging the gap between young people and local community providers, Beyond Empower hopes to support active lives in and beyond school settings for the students now to support behaviours and opportunities that extend into adulthood.
