The post holder reports to the Area Swimming co-ordinator. The main contacts of the job are Swimming co-ordinator, School teachers, School PE co-ordinators, local community Swimming Clubs, Serco Facility Managers, Sports Development Officers.
Main purpose of the Job
The post holder will deliver a swimming instruction programme to the schools that attend the school swimming programme, after school activities and top up swimming programmes.
Working with the Swimming Co-ordinator, to set aims and objectives for the programme. To monitor, evaluate and review the programmes on a regular basis and to provide statistical data and other relevant information
Main Duties
- To deliver the daily swimming instruction programme for all children at any facility within the City Council’s area and to maintain a standard of swimming instruction which is in accordance with the agreed Manchester School Swimming programme
- To implement Manchester’s School Swimming Programme Policies and Procedures for the safety of the pupils, school staff and swimming instructor
- To undertake and maintain effective methods of assessment for children attending the schools swimming programme and after school programme
- To produce data on children’s progress and achievement daily and provide feedback to the co-ordinator on a monthly bases
- To regular appraise changes within Swimming Development and adopt methods of good practice. To attend all training courses organised or recommended by the department
- To develop a proactive approach to promote a good working relationship with schools and facility managers
- To monitor, review and implement all elements of the swimming programme and additional activities. This to include risk assessment, health and Safety issues at local facilities
- To be responsible for the use and safety of all swimming equipment including storage
- To promote and support the annual School Swimming Galas
- To promote and encourage all aquatic activities i.e. after school clubs holiday schemes etc
- Participate in new initiatives and future changes in service delivery improvements
- Support the team in promoting equal opportunities in the workplace and delivering services, which are accessible and appropriate to the diverse needs of the service
- Actively pursue own personal development and take full advantage of training provided
- Promote the City Council’s values and objectives in a practical, positive way
- Any other duties and responsibilities, which come within the purview of the school swimming programme
Where the post holder is disabled every effort will be made to supply all necessary aids, adaptations or equipment to allow them to carry out all the duties of the job. If however, a certain task proves to be unachievable, job redesign will be fully considered
Person Specification
- Holder of ASA Level 2 Teacher Award
- Holder of RLSS National Pool Lifeguard Certificate
- Knowledge of the National Curriculum requirements for swimming
- Knowledge of current swimming teaching techniques and an understanding of the ASA’s “Fundamentals” and “Long Term Athlete Development”
- Evidence of teaching swimming to groups of 30 pupils at Key stage 2
- Evidence of teaching swimming to children with special needs
- Strong communication skills, both oral and written
- Must be able to work on own initiative to agreed work tasks
- Must be able to produce statistical data
- Must have knowledge and understanding of equal opportunities within sport
- Good understanding of lesson planning
