Maximising the Primary PE and Sport Premium through effective professional learning

A key objective of the Primary PE and Sport Premium is to improve the quality of existing PE teaching through continuing professional development in PE for generalists, so that all primary pupils improve their health, skills and physical literacy, and have broader exposure to a range of sports.

Level 5 & 6 Professional Vocational Degree in Primary School Specialism and Subject Leadership for PE & School Sport

A new bespoke physical education & school sport qualification for primary school teachers developed by the Association for Physical Education (afPE) and Sports Leaders UK. Both qualifications will be an effective use of the physical education and school sport premium funding. By upskilling primary teachers it will ensure a sustainable high quality primary school physical education.

Level 5 is open to teachers and teaching assistants to assist in raising standards within primary school physical education. Level 6 will allow primary school teachers to become physical education and primary school sport specialists.

Level 2 Cert Supporting learning in PE & School Sport

Developed in partnership with the (AfPE), THIS course aims to provide learners with an introduction to a number of roles through an engagement with physical education and school sport (PESS), including teaching, activity leadership and coaching for young people. Click here for more details.

YST Coaching in Schools Programme – Online learning modules

The Youth Sport Trust has developed an online leaning package to help support coaches working in school sport. The Coaching in School Sport programme, comprising four modules, gives access to videos, commentaries, guides, action planning, self-reflection and good practice downloads. It is also suitable for teachers and other adults who support the delivery of school sport. Click here for more details.

Level 3 Certificate in Supporting Physical Development & Physical Activity in the Early Years

This qualification will support the up-skilling of early years professionals, such as child minders, nursery and pre-school staff, teaching assistants and activity leaders in the area of children’s physical development and physical activity sessions. Click here for more details.

Sporting Promise - Top Sport Teacher training & resources

Supports the delivery of PE and sport in primary schools. Consists of a free 6 hr training course, resource cards, posters and access to interactive software package. Click here for further information.
