Manchester Metropolitan University is the largest campus-based undergraduate university in the UK with a total student population of more than 37,000. Our claim is to be the ‘University for World Class professionals’, placing emphasis on vocational education and employability. Sport and physical activity is an important part of University life at MMU and we have a fantastic programme of activities available, providing something for everyone: from those who want to try an activity for the first time, all the way to supporting athletes who are competing at a national and international level.

We also offer Active Lifestyle classes which focus on health and wellbeing, with activities such as yoga and rave fitness, including women’s only sessions. Our termly group fitness classes, are similar to HIIT training but the group environment makes it fun and you work with others to reach your goal. Our HealthyU programme offers participants the chance to change their lifestyle and banish bad habits for good in a supportive and personal environment.
Take advantage of our Active Campus programme that, thanks to funding from Sport England, offers over 60 free, fun and casual sports sessions every week! Try something completely new, with our coach-led eight week Get Into courses, offering a chance to get to grips with sports like climbing and canoeing. Or, for those with a competitive edge, get a team together and take on another group of friends, a hall of residence or a department in our, friendly Campus Leagues. We also offer Active Lifestyle classes, with activities such as yoga and rave fitness, including women’s only sessions.
Students’ Union Sports Clubs
Joining a sports club gives students the chance to take part in a variety of recreational and competitive activities, whilst enjoying an incredible sense of community, pride and friendship. We have over 60 student-led sports clubs at MMU, many of which offer the chance to represent the University on Wednesdays in the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) leagues).
Through our Sport Scholarship programme, we support talented athletes from a variety of sporting background as they combine a demanding training and competition programme with study for a world-class degree. Our athletes enjoy a range of benefits provided by the University, including; a course fee reduction, a financial contribution, access to athlete support services, annual gym membership, sport science support, flexible study time and lifestyle mentoring.
Get qualified and get experience
Our range of sport qualifications and coach education courses provide an opportunity to enhance employability and career opportunities and are vital for all students. We also offer a range of volunteering roles, including opportunities on high profile sporting events, that can will help students learn new skills and gain valuable work experience, while giving something back to the local community.
We have several fantastic sports facilities right on our doorstep, including the Sugden Sports Centre and the Manchester Aquatics Centre. We also run the fantastic gym and pitch facilities at Platt Lane (the former Man City training ground). All of our facilities offer a range of health and fitness activities, gym access and exclusive student membership deals. All of our sports centres also accept the met card.
