Multicultural Swimming Sessions

Ethnic Minority Pages

Funding through 'Kellogs's Active' project has opened the door for a new women and girls only learn to swim programme in Bury.

The programme aims to promote lifelong participation, remove barriers around transport and target work around ethnic minority groups in the borough.

The programme was developed through the ‘women and girls sports focus group’.  Initially the group approached the refugee and asylum seekers support group for phase 1 of the new swim session.

The result of the partnership lead to women from Turkish, Iranian, Kosovan, Russian and Ethiopans backgrounds attending the ‘women only swim sessions’.  The sessions included a complete all female environment including lifeguards and coaches poolside.

All attendees can now swim and two ladies have achieved their ASA Level 5 swim Award.

The sessions have improved by providing blinds for completely private sessions for the women.  This means that Under 16 girls can now swim in an all female 'private environment, which will be paraticularly beneficial to Asian girls and other denominations where faith prevents females swimming in an open environment.

If you are interested in these sessions, please contact Yvonne Hall, Disability Sport and Inclusion Officer, Bury Sports Development on Tel: 0161 2536388 or email Y.Hall@bury.gov.uk
