Health Partnerships Sport, Physical Activity and Public Health

As part of the Be Active Be Healthy Physical Activity Delivery plan, the Department of Health funded CSPs for 2 years to work to promote physical activity among the adult population. The aim was to increase participation levels among the population.  This work also formed part of the London Olympic and Paralympic 2012 Legacy Action Plan

GreaterSport employed a Physical Activity Manager for 2 years to drive this work forward. A Greater Manchester Physical Activity Group comprising the physical activity leads from the 10 Sport and Physical Activity Alliances (SPAAs) has been established to be the strategic body that develops a co-ordinated approach to improving physical activity provision.

There is a Greater Manchester Physical Activity plan 2010-12 which underpins the physical activity element of Changing Lives.  This plan is delivered through a mix of delivery of projects and influence and advocacy for the physical activity agenda with key political and strategic partners.

Under the Coalition Government the structure of the NHS has been shaken up, with local PCTs being abolished by March 2013 and GP consortia and local Health and Well-being boards taking their place. In addition the availability of public funding has been drastically reduced.

As such GreaterSport and the County Sport Partnership Network (CSPN) have responded to the changes with a Public Health offer to statutory health and local authority partners, outlining the role that CSPs can undertake in delivering a physical activity offer for the population.  The National CSPN Physical Activity Offer for public health is available using the link below.

GreaterSport will be producing a Greater Manchester Specific Physical Activity offer that supports the Greater Manchester infrastructure and looks to develop the existing physical activity provision with a range of partners.
