Manchester Futsal Club Friday, May 18th, 2012

About the Club

Manchester Futsal Club compete in the FA National Futsal League North and have been runners-up twice previously. Last season, the club won the FA Futsal Cup – a first major honour since being founded in 2006. Their home games are played at the National Cycling Centre (Velodrome), Manchester. In their team we have two England internationals, with potentially more on the horizon given the form of the players this season.

Why have we put the spotlight on Manchester Futsal Club?

This season, Manchester Futsal Club were crowned champions of the FA National Futsal League North for the first time in the club’s history. It has been a fantastic achievement by everyone at the club, especially after coming so close on previous occasions. The team won the league in style – remaining unbeaten since October, maintaining the best defensive record in the country and by scoring 118 goals in just 12 games. Winning the league will hopefully help them attract more good players in order to retain the title again next season.

Manchester Amputee Fitness Initiative (MANFIT) Monday, January 30th, 2012

About the Club
Manchester Amputee Fitness Initiative is a unique service for amputees. The aim of MANFIT is to give prosthesis users the confidence to get/keep fit and ultimately to integrate into main stream sports centres but they can continue attend Manfit sessions if they want to. Confidence follows on from the strength, stamina and flexibility that lead to better operation of the prosthesis. The social interaction during exercise and after, during a free lunch, together with exercise induced endorphin release also gives people confidence. All sessions are FREE apart from non-contact boxing sessions. The gym sessions take place at The Manchester College (Openshaw Campus) fitness suite on Fridays 10.30-11.30am followed by a FREE lunch. A weekly exclusive swimming group takes place at Manchester Aquatics Centre (MAC) on Tuesdays from 1.30 – 2.30pm. A weekly non-contact boxing session takes place at Moss Side Fire Station on Wednesdays from 10.00 – 11.00am for a small fee.
Why have we put the spotlight on Manchester Amputee Fitness Initiative?
The swimming sessions have new funding through Manchester Sport and Leisure Trust and Sport England. Their members are now special members of the MAC with their own swipe cards because of the work of Jemma Alderson (Sports Development Officer), Clare Goatman of Manchester Sport and Leisure Trust and Louise Gardiner, Commercial and Event Manager Serco Leisure (Managing on behalf of Manchester Sport & Leisure Trust). Hopefully this should result in an increase in the number of people taking advantage of the health and social benefits of MANFIT. These benefits cannot be overestimated as they contribute to the feelings of wellbeing and confidence MANFIT sessions give to new and experienced amputees.

The Club has also won Trafford Sports Club of the year and was last year awarded Greater Manchester Club of the Year.

Why have we put the spotlight on AFC Urmston Meadowside?

The Club has recently opened its new state-of-the-art Clubhouse which is the result of 3 years hard work in fund raising. With the help of Manchester FA the Club was able to secure a major proportion of the cost  through a grant from the Football Foundation. In addition to 6 changing rooms,  the new building includes a Community Room that will be used to facilitate club meetings, coach education, school functions and local community groups. Urmston Meadowside celebrated the official opening of the clubhouse with the help of Manchester City & England goalkeeper, Joe Hart (pictured above with some of the young players and pictured left with Club Chairman John Burnett) who spent over 2 hours with club members, special guests and young players at the event in October.

Spotlighton: TRAFFORD MV RUGBY FOOTBALL AND CRICKET CLUB Thursday, November 24th, 2011

About the Club

Formed in 1923 and based in Sale, Trafford MV is a great example of a community sports club. Initially a works side MV have built themselves into a respected club in the North West circuit. They field 3 senior teams and a host of age groups starting at Under 3 years into late teens.  Trafford MV is always seeking to improve and recent years have seen major investments in a floodlit pitch, new changing and shower facilities and clubhouse refurbishments to improve the facilities offered to its players.
The Club is keen to progress but is committed to its amateur status and as such all funding goes into player and club facilities. New players are always welcome and they endeavour to accommodate players of all abilities whenever they can. They have strong links with local schools in the Trafford area as well as the Universities of Manchester and Salford. Sale Sharks are regular supporters of their youth section. New players with a commitment to training hard and playing hard are currently sought by MV to add strength in depth to the 1st and 2nd XV squads.
They train each Tues/Thurs at 6.30pm and Sun mornings at 10.30am for their mini/junior Hawks section.
Why have we put the spotlight on Trafford Metrovicks?

Trafford MV is an amateur Rugby Union seeking to compete in an ever progressing semi pro arena.  The recent Rugby Union World Cup, the forthcoming Heineken European Cup and the increased TV coverage of the Aviva Premiership gives an increased coverage at the top of the game but the grass root clubs have to work hard to recruit players and finance the running of the clubs. Trafford MV work within the local community to provide the first steps into Rugby Union for hundreds of youngsters on a weekly basis. In summer we provide mixed Touch Rugby as part of the RFU touch rugby initiative. Throughout the winter months we provide training and matches for young adults as well as keeping older adults within the sport.
Our Hawks youth section has a great input from parents and coaches and we seek to put people through their coaching certificates as much as we can to increase the training benefits to our young players. The core of our current 1st XV squad has grown through our own club youth structure to the credit of the club coaches.
We are a club run by the players for the players and in view of this we do not get drawn down commercial/political avenues that detract from our main sports.
During the Summer months our attention gets drawn to Cricket with 2 senior sides, a Sunday XI. Our women’s XI had a superb season winning both League and Cup competitions.
We have a softball team using our facilities and we are currently looking at other sports to make full use of our excellent pitches, changing and clubhouse facilities.
