Club Night for All the Family! Friday, August 5th, 2011
A partnership between GreaterSport and British Orienteering is giving families a new way to keep fit and a chance for them to learn a new sport.
Orienteering, which combines outdoor adventure and fun, is ideal for people of all ages, shapes and sizes. The sport provides a healthy mix of physical activity and mental decision making, and no map reading skills are necessary for beginners. It’s perfect for children, who can run around in a fun, safe, controlled environment and also excellent for adults wanting to shape up, try something new and meet new friends.
The partnership has seen the development of four new club sessions due to be set up in the second half of 2011, led by friendly, qualified and experienced coaches. These sessions are the culmination of a fully funded project that aimed to recruit, develop and deploy orienteering coaches across Greater Manchester with a view to increasing regular participation in the sport.
Want to know what orienteering really is? GreaterSport and British Orienteering welcome local children and adults to come along to their new weekly club nights at:
Parrs Wood High School Sports Centre, Didsbury – Tuesday nights, 6:30pm – 8pm (starts 21st June).
Burrs Activity Centre, Bury – Thursday nights, 6:30pm – 8pm (starts 18th Aug).
Salford Quays Water Sports Centre – Wednesday nights, 6:30pm – 8pm (starts 17th Aug).
Manchester Grammar School, Manchester – Thursday nights, 6:30pm – 8pm (starts 15th September).
North of England Lead Community Orienteering Coach Hamish Willis said: “Orienteering is really good fun and everyone is welcome to come along and join in. The club nights will focus on teaching people the basic skills of orienteering and map reading in a fun, social setting. People have mixed perceptions about what orienteering is all about so come along and try it for yourself. It is easy to pick up the basic skills and get involved!”
“All the clubs are very friendly and family orientated club with members aged from 8 to 80 so don’t be put off as anyone is welcome”.
The club night involves activities where members can improve their fitness levels and practice orienteering skills. Although some new members may want to compete in events as well, the main aim of the club night is to encourage as many people as possible to take part in orienteering and enjoy keeping fit.
