The Power of Sport to Improve Health Conference 27th January 2011, The Point, Lancashire County Cricket Club, Old Trafford

This conference was organised by the Greater Manchester Public Health Network and GreaterSport with support from some health partners and the Events Northern Events Management Company.

The event attracted over 80 delegates  from across the Greater Manchester sports clubs, national governing bodies, local authorities and health agencies, who came to see 13 exhibitors from GM Sports clubs working to deliver health programmes in their communities.  Delegates also heard from  7 speakers including Mike Farrar, NHS Physical Activity Tsar, Eamonn Boylan from the Greater Manchester Health Commission, Colin Avery from Oldham’s ‘Playing Safely’ Campaign, Peter Baker from the Men’s Health Forum, Simon Morgan from the Premier League, Matthew Philpott and Mike Parker from Healthy Stadia Network and Dean Grice from The Football League Trust. The speakers outlined the potential of a co-ordinated sport clubs and health network to deliver on the population health challenges in Greater Manchester. During the afternoon delegates had the opportunity to contibute ideas to shape the nature of the network and the first priorities for it’s work.  GreaterSport will be taking this information and leading the co-ordination of the network over the next 12 months.  More information on this work can be found on the ’Greater Manchester Network of Sport and Health’ link below.
