Safeguarding/Coaching Standards

Coaching Standards

Sportivate sessions will be affordable, accessible, appropriate and attractive to the participants. It is recognised that this may result in different styles of delivery for different projects. For example, a session aimed at introducing 14 year olds to handball is very different to a recreational football session for 25 year olds. It will be the responsibility of the local Sportivate Lead/provider to decide if the deliverer is suitable. Sports Coach UK’s Minimum Standards for Deployment of Coaches is available to support this process and can be downloaded below.

Where SPAA leads have a question over the level of coach they should be allowing to deliver a session, the specific NGB guidance for that sport should be followed in the first instance. Contact the NGB for this information, or alternatively, contact GreaterSport who will speak to the NGB on your behalf.

Safeguarding

Ensuring that appropriate safeguarding measures are in place throughout the delivery chain is the legal responsibility of everyone involved in delivery of Sportivate. The Safeguarding Support Toolkit is a resource developed by the Child Protection in Sport Unit (CPSU) to support the work of all those involved in sports programmes such as Sportivate. This document identifies the safeguarding measures that all Sportivate activity deliverers are required to have in place and provides guidance on how you can assist your Sportivate deliverers to achieve these standards. Click the link at the bottom of the page for the most up-to-date guidance, examples of good practice and sample policies and procedures.

The Partnership Check and Challenge Tool is a simple-to-use checklist to ensure that children and young people are safe when taking part in sport and physical activities. This resource:

  • outlines the key aspects of safeguarding and protecting children and young people
  • outlines the safeguarding responsibilities of each partner organisation.
  • encourages partners to clarify and agree key safeguarding roles prior to the activities commencing.

The High Quality Community Sport for Young People guidance provides commissioning organisations with a simple, easy to use framework to help them ensure the community sport providers they work with are in a position to offer high quality sporting experiences for young people. It will also help these community sport providers to meet the minimum operating standards expected. The aim is to support all those involved in community sport to ensure that young people have access to a wide range of attractive and alternative sporting opportunities within a safe and quality-driven environment.
