GreaterSport does not have an officer responsible for angling however does work closely with the Angling Development Board.
Angling is an inclusive sport with virtually no barriers to participation and can offer a variety of packages to suit appropriate audiences, but will generally fall into one of 3 categories:
1. Open College Network (OCN) accredited qualification - Angling and the Environment. This is a 20 hour course that can be delivered both at school facilities and bankside at club facilities. Participants will learn about the different aspects of angling and will also learn about the following: geography; biology; chemistry; numeracy; literacy; waterside safety; the countryside code. The course also makes a significant contribution to meeting the Every Child Matters national framework outcomes.
2. For those students for whom a fully academic curriculum is thought unsuitable, a modified OCN course is available. This modified programme of study buils into a portfolio of work that can be easily linked into ASDAN Units if the school wishes. Alternatively, it can be certificated by Angling in Schools as a stand alone course.
3. Get Hooked on Fishing offers modules that aim specifically at diverting 'at risk' young people away from drugs, crime and anti-social behaviour and at enhancing social inclusion.
Angling has a number of partners that programmes can be linked in order to sustain initial programmes and taster days. All coaches delivering angling in schools will be members of a local club and will be a direct interface to participants in encouraging young people to join their local club. Support can also be given to schools in developing a school angling club, with students running and organising the club themselves. An inter school, county and regional competition structure will also be developed for gifted and talented participants to progress along the player pathway. Teachers and older students (16+) will have the opportunity to progress along the coaching pathway, by in the first instance taking a level 1 coaching qualification.
