GreaterSport and England Basketball are working hard to increase the availability and enhance the quality of basketball competition in Greater Manchester.
Greater Manchester Schools Basketball League
This adds an exciting new tier to competition within the county, and is available to those affiliated schools competing in borough competition. Initially for Key Stage 3 boys with a view to increase next season to year groups which would also include a girls competition. The Greater Manchester Schools Basketball league will act as a Greater Manchester final to which all the borough competition winners will be invited to battle it out for the honour of being crowned County Champions. A confirmed date has yet to be placed but it is expected to take place the last week in April 2007, using a high profile venue.

Girls Basketball Project
To celebrate the FIBA Europes Year of Womans Basketball the Greater Manchester Development Group has established a project to introduce up to 1000 girls to basketball throughout the county. The programme is underway and is running from October to December 2006. Beginning with an Apprentice Coach and Referees course for under 17 girls. The next stage is focusing on primary schools year 5 and 6, who will be invited to attend a number of free sessions at the local secondary school ran by a qualified coach assisted by the newly qualified coaches and officials. These girls will compete in a borough tournament representing their school. Each boroughs winning school will be invited to the Amaechi Centre on December 14th to play against other boroughs schools in the areas best facility. This project has the full backing of England Basketball who have contributed financially to the running of the programme.
