September 2006
This project was developed by the Greater Manchester Basketball Focus Group and will involve girls from all over Greater Manchester. Currently underway within the boroughs, the programme has already created several newly qualified female coaches and referees, which will be used in delivery of the programme.
Occuring shortly will be several free coaching sessions provided free to girls in school years 5 and 6. These sessions will run differently depending on the borough involved, but all will end with a borough competition which will provide one successful primary to compete in the Greater Manchester Finals on December 14th at the Amaechi Basketball Centre.
January 2007
The first phase of the project was completed at the Amaechi Basketball Centre at Whalley Range in December 2006. Boroughs from around Greater Manchester worked with GreaterSport and England Basketball to provide coaching and competition to girls in years 5 and 6 from England Basketball Affiliated Primary Schools. These schools were then given the chance to represent their borough at the Amaechi Centre.
Schools from Manchester, Oldham, Stockport, Tameside and Wigan attended the finals, along with volunteers from Whalley Range High School and Manchester Mysitcs. Feedback from the day was very positive and the basketball was of an incredibly high standard!
The competition ran as a round robin tournament, with four of the five boroughs almost inseperable. All games were competited well and every player, team and coach should be proud of their achievements. In the end it was an unbeaten Stockport side who were deserved champions. Their medals presented to them by Kristy Lavin, England and Great Britain player and Commonwealth Bronze medalist.
Finally a huge thankyou to all the officials, coaches and volunteers who made this day possible.
More to come in 2007
