My 7 yr old daughter competed this year in the cheerleading and her squad won the GOLD for Trafford. It was a fantastic day and a big well done to all the cheerleaders, the standard was high and all were (as always) great sports and very supportive of our very young squad xxx 'WE LOVE IT, WE LOVE IT, WE WANT MORE OF IT'

I competed in the GMYG when i was younger and thouroughly enjoyed the event. I think it is important for children and young people to have the opportunity to compete against other boroughs in such a high profile event. This will be my 3rd year of supporting the Youth Games. Lets hope we can build on from last years games and bring even more medals home. Good Luck Team Wigan !!!

I was present at the GMYG last year for the first time. This following a number of years involved in the Lancashire Youth Games. To say the Greater Manchester version is more competitive is an understatement!! Though I suppose a bit of friendly competition doesn't do anybody any harm... Best of luck to all the participants this year. And in particular go 'Team Wigan'!!

I have so many memories of the Greater Manchester Youth Games both as a volunteer and as a paid professional. As a volunteer, I enjoyed acting as Event Organiser for YDP Table Tennis. This included everything from the pre event meetings, organising the event draw, watching matches, meeting friends, families and dignatories to mopping the floor because the tent had flooded ... fun, fun fun Professionally as Games Referee and Site Manager there have been incidents but the spirit of the games has always lead to a favourable outcome. As the County Disability Officer for Greater Manchester the games has raised a smile more than once. The challenges and success of the disabled athletes have been many but the games has always been the true winner. In my own club, I am proud to say that one of my players competed in the Youth Games four years ago and now plays in the Great Britain Wheelchair Basketball team. She has even starred in the TV drama Desparado's alongside Ade Adepitan the BBC wheelchair dancer that starred in the TV advert. Its one of those things the Youth Games, you cant let go of it.. its an addiction and long may it continue.

I have had the pleasure of being involved in the youth games for the last 12 years as a player, volunteer, coach and team manager. My first memories of the youth games were representing oldham at hockey at the Armitage Centre in 1996 winning a gold medal. The experience and atmosphere of the weekend is something i will always hold close to my heart. To be participating in such a big event at a young age, it gave me the opportunity to make friends from all walks of life with the same interests as me that i am still in contact with after 11 years. Because of this event it has motivated me to work go through the pathways from a volunteer to an Assistant Sport Development officer at Oldham Sport Development. Good luck this year Team Oldham!!!

Having been involved in the Youth Games for 8 years now it is great to see the long term effect it can have on people's lives. From seeing 11 year olds compete for the first time, then become members of a club, and finally, return to the Youth Games as a coach or team manager years later is what it is all about. I love seeing the pride of young people representing their town, and the effort and enthusiasm that goes into competing against other teams of a similar level of development. Everyone involved in sport knows about the Youth Games, and everyone wants to represent the town they live in at the Youth Games. I definitely feel that I missed out in my youth, not competing in the Greater Manchester Youth Games. It has built a great legacy.....long may it continue!

I have been involved in the Youth Games through Salford Vikings Basketball Club since 2006. We have held open trials for players each year and have been involved in the Greater Manchester league to qualify for the Youth Games. My involvement is as chairperson of the club and as a parent of a player. I have been extremely proud of the children throughout their involvement with the games - they all wear their Salford t-shirt with pride.

I have been involved in the Greater Manchester Youth Games for as long as I can remember, both me and my sister Tiff have played on the GMYG Netball teams and I remember feeling really proud about representing my home town. I use to really enjoy the games at the Armitage Centre where all the sports were together, which gave us the opportunity to go and support other Oldham teams. The Youth Games gave me the chance to meet new friends, which most of them are still and will be life long friends, some of which I still play Netball with at Oldham Netball Club. Through my passion and enjoyment of sport I have representated team Oldham as a volunteer, a coach and now a Community Sport Development Officer at Oldham Sport Development. Events like the Youth Games give a young person such a fantastic opportuntiy to follow their pathway in sport, as I did and luckily I am able to share this amazing expereince as a Sport Development Officer with the young people year on year. Without the dedication, commitment and passion from volunteers, coaches, officials and organisers, I and other participants wouldnt have experienced this proud moment of representing their area at the Youth Games Come on Team Oldham!!!!

I first got involved in the Youth Games when I was 11 (for Stockport) and it is probably fair to say that it is the single biggest reason why I have ended up working in sport as my full time job. The Youth Games was my first experience of competitive sport and really gave me a passion for sport as a whole. I first took part in the Games when it was held at the Armitage and the event and the experience it gave me was amazing. I have seen the Youth Games change over the years, but never has the enjoyment and pride on young peoples faces changed when they represent their borough. As a volunteer and now working in Sports Development (in Oldham) I have been lucky enough to every year see young people enjoying themselves and achieving some incredible goals. I only hope that in the future the games is able to impact on more young people as it did with me. Thanks to everyone who has been involved in the Youth Games over the years!

I was involved in the Youth Games in 96/97/98 playing netball for Oldham. I loved the Youth Games when I played in them, especially as they used to take place in the sun! I won 1 silver and 2 bronze medals, never the gold! I think we lost to Trafford every year - they were our big rivals. The atmosphere at the Youth Games was always electric and I have very fond memories from each of the Games that I played in. I am now involved in the Youth Games through Wigan Sports Development, where I work as a Sports Development Officer. It is great to go back to the Games in a professional capacity and see kids enjoying themselves like I did over 10 years ago!

I used to love competing in the youth games. It was different to all the other competitions i did. The atmosphere was more exciting and there was always more spectators, which encouraged me to run faster and jump further when i did the triple jump and won it!! I wasn't even meant to do it, but so glad i did do it because i loved standing on the podium! Good luck to anyone who is competing in this years youth games, i'm sure you will love every minute of it.

Organising this helped me to develop lots of really useful skills which help me in my working life now! |

I cant believe the Greater Manchester Youth Games has now been around for 20 years! What a fantastic event for children, young people, families, coaches, sports leaders, volunteers and sports development staff! I have been involved in the games over the 20 years in various roles from a volunteer, to a coach, to a sports development officer and now Head of Sport and Extended Learning in Oldham. I have some great memories of the games from those glorious sunny days at the Armitage Centre to most recent times at the Manchester Venues. For me the Youth Games has always inspired me and has given me some great experiences that have helped me professionally. Big thanks to all those that make it happen including Greater Sport Staff, Sport Development Officers, Team Managers, Coaches, Teachers, Volunteers, Young Leaders and parents. Also good luck to Team Oldham for 2008! Neil

Little did I know that Trafford would be in the play offs against Tameside whose team manager is a tennis member of my club...the banter was fantastic. | I remember being really keen on football but not knowing about any teams - i played for my primary school but that was it. My teacher brought me a flyer with information about the borough trials and the youth games - i got involved and it was the first time i was involved with football properly. I am still involved with playing football to this day (many years later!) and think the Youth Games got me going. I am still involved with the youth games now - although behind the scenes and i would love to think that some of the participants this year, like me will be starting a life time love of their sport! |

This will be my fourth Youth Games. Once as a volunteer, and the others within the industry. My first memory of the Games was one of pure amazement! I'd never seen anything like it before! It was fantastic to see so many young people enjoying sport and giving it their all for their borough. Since becoming involved behind the scenes its certainly been an experience, the months of hard work leading up to the games, breaking three vans in 2006 and getting one stuck in the mud in 2007. Hopefully 2008 will be free of driving catastrophes! Whatever happens, its worth all the sacrifice and embarrassment if the event goes well and is enjoyed by all the participants!
