Greater Manchester Police Authority
Greater Manchester Police Authority (GMPA) is proud to be a 2008 sponsor of Manchester Youth Games.
It is the first time the Authority has been a Games' sponsor and it is keen to use the opportunity to develop and build relations with young people.
GMPA already has good links with many youth organisations - one of the many functions of a police authority is to consult local communities to find out what they think about policing and each year, GMPA holds a consultation event specifically for youngsters so they can have their say.
Progress is also being made with a project which will see a team of young people leading a project to produce a DVD resource pack. The pack will be used in places such as schools and youth centres to stimulate debate about important issues surrounding identity and culture.
But these projects are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the areas of work of a police authority. For example, did you know it is the authority's job to hold the police budget and set the levels council tax payers will pay for policing? It is also the authority's job to hire the Chief Constable and keep a watchful eye over them to ensure they are delivering a police service which is efficient and effective?
