Job role: Education and Recruitment Officer

Salary: £18,000 - £20,000

Length of contract: Full time - Permanent

Wigan Athletic Community Trust is looking to appoint an Education and Recruitment Officer to provide mentoring and teaching to a group of students studying for a Foundation Degree in Community Football Coaching and support the recruitment of learners and participants onto a range of Training and Skills programmes.

You will:

  • Provide mentoring and educational support to a cohort of students enrolled onto a distance learning Foundation Degree in Sports Coaching with the University of South Wales.
  • Develop and implement a recruitment strategy for a range of education programmes including NCS, Traineeships, Level 2 Football and Education Programme and USW Foundation Degree Programme.
  • Deliver Level 2 Business and Enterprise qualifications to Year 10 and 11 students at selected secondary schools.
  • Attend careers events, visit Secondary Schools and other education events to promote the Community Trust’s post 16 Training and Skills offer.
  • To provide teaching cover for in case of holidays and sickness for a Level 2 Football and Education programme and Level 3 apprenticeship in PE and School Sport.
  • Support the delivery of the NCS programme including attending residential activities.
  • Ensure all project partners are kept informed on progress of learners and that all monitoring and evaluation reports are completed on time.
  • Ensure all activities are correctly monitored with the appropriate risk assessments and health and safety procedures put in place.
  • Work with the Head of Community to identify potential funding and project opportunities within post 16 education.
  • Represent Wigan Athletic Community Trust at stakeholder and community meetings across Wigan and on occasion at a regional and national level.
  • Be a flexible member of the Wigan Athletic Community Trust team and when requested, assist in the delivery of other projects and activities including evenings and weekends.

You will have:

  • The ability to support and mentor young people and build positive relationships
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • The ability to plan and organise own workload effectively
  • Experience of PE and Community sports coaching
  • The ability to create and build partnerships with external stakeholders
  • The ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines
  • The ability to empathise with young people and also challenge negative behaviours 
  • Sound understanding of equality and diversity
  • The ability to work on own initiative
  • Competent IT skills

Essential Requirements

  • Degree or equivalent level qualification in a sport-related topic
  • PGCE in Further Education
  • The ability to deliver engaging presentations to large audiences
  • Relevant and current subject knowledge of sports coaching
  • Experience of teaching within further education
  • Self-motivated with the ability to prioritise own work
  • The ability to perform under pressure and to tight deadlines
  • The ability to empathise with young people and also challenge negative behaviours.

Desirable Requirements

  • FA Level 1 and 2 in Coaching Football
  • 1st4Sport Level 3 Certificate in Supporting the Delivery of PE and School Sport
  • Level 3 Assessor Award (or equivalent)
  • 1st 4sport Level 2 Award in Multi-Skills Development in Sport
  • Understanding of current issues in the education and training sector
  • Good understanding of the community sport and education sector
  • Previous successful experience of helping to run community programmes for young people including the recruitment of large numbers of participants
  • Experience of teaching higher education
  • Full clean driving license
