Emirates Old Trafford celebrates the volunteers who make physical activity and sport happen
Date9th November 2018
The Greater Manchester Sports Awards, now in their 18th year, take place on 16th November at Emirates Old Trafford. They celebrate the outstanding commitment and achievements made in physical activity and sport across Greater Manchester. BBC Radio Manchester presenter Chelsea Norris is the night’s host, who will be joined by guest speaker Claire Lomas; marathoner, motor biker, hand cyclist and campaigner. The 10 boroughs of Greater Manchester hold their own awards and the winners from eight categories are invited to the Greater Manchester event.
Emirates Old Trafford are the official sponsor of the Volunteer of the Year Award which recognises the selfless commitment demonstrated by our 10 finalists. Each of the volunteers give up a significant proportion of their personal time to help others. The finalists’ generosity is far-reaching and helps provide opportunities for countless others to participate in physical activity and sport. Many of the volunteers also work tirelessly to enhance the sporting ability of others and help with the logistical aspects of a number of teams and clubs. The volunteers battling it out to become Greater Manchester champions are;
- Bolton - Darren Crompton (Football)
- Bury - Jamie Clarke (Martial Arts)
- Manchester - Ciara Gostling (Cycling)
- Oldham - Andy Steel (Football)
- Rochdale - Barbara Bayliss (Parkrun)
- Salford - Angela Rittaker (Rugby League)
- Stockport - Richard Gregg (Football)
- Tameside - Adam Hawley (Cricket)
- Trafford - Malcolm Sterling (Parkrun)
- Wigan - David Clarke (Cycling, Dance)
This year’s winner will follow in the footsteps of Nicola Steen from Tameside, 2017 Greater Manchester Volunteer of the Year. Nicola co-founded Mossley Running Club in November 2015 and spends an average of 20 hours volunteering. In the two years since, it had grown from 12 members to around 200! Nicola often goes above and beyond the call of duty, such as the Mossley 10k, when she tailed at the back to encourage runners. After finishing the half marathon during the Tour of Tameside, she ran back along the route to support other runners from the club.
