The Greater Manchester Sports Awards, now in their 18th year, take place on 16th November at The Point Emirates Old Trafford. They celebrate the outstanding commitment and achievements made in physical activity and sport across Greater Manchester. BBC Radio Manchester presenter Chelsea Norris is the night’s host, who will be joined by guest speaker Claire Lomas; marathoner, motor biker, hand cyclist and campaigner. The 10 boroughs of Greater Manchester hold their own awards and the winners from eight categories are invited to the Greater Manchester event.

HGA are official sponsors of the Unsung Hero Award which celebrates the unrelenting commitment and passion shown by all ten finalists. The finalists in this category often go underappreciated for the sheer amount of time they sacrifice in order for others to take part in physical activity and sport. Often the finalists wear many hats, being team managers, secretaries, kit-washers and everything in between, all for the benefit of others. The people battling it out to become Greater Manchester champions are;

  • Bolton - Susan Bingham (Football)
  • Bury - Vivien Makin (Hockey)
  • Manchester - Paul Colton (Roller Hockey)
  • Oldham - Dave Donlan (Football)
  • Rochdale - Lynn Jopson (Dance)
  • Salford - Keith Brookes (Multi-sports)
  • Stockport - Rod Pimlott (Football)
  • Tameside - Yvonne Kelley (Posthumous)
  • Trafford - Jill Langley (Tennis)
  • Wigan - Kath Pilkington (Dance)

This year’s winner will follow in the footsteps Wigan’s Mike Hack, 2017’s Greater Manchester Unsung Hero. Mike was a founder member of Astley & Tyldesley Cycling Club, and has held a number of roles in that time including: Secretary, Press Officer, Development (grant) Officer, Coach and Grade ‘A’ International Referee. He was also Chair of the Northern Cycle Speedway League, General Secretary of International Cycle Speedway Federation and has worked with British Cycling.
