We had a great catch-up with Moving Forces member Paul Nutter this weekend at parkrun Hyde as they celebrated their 2nd birthday.

Paul attended the Moving Forces launch event at Active Medlock in September 2018 where he met Liz, who organises the Hyde parkrun. Since then he’s attended as either a runner or volunteer every Saturday morning. He’s also taken advantage of the Moving Forces discounted gym and swim pass with Active Tameside.

We spoke with Paul about his activity levels since leaving the forces and about his progress since joining the Moving Forces project.

Paul served in the Royal Engineers from 1987 – 2001.

“Since I left the forces, the weight piled on, I wasn’t doing much, it was just all work and fitting into the local area. I went up to about 17 ½ stone and obviously I wasn’t very mobile, I was just sleeping all the time. The main barrier to staying active was with work, being a trucker it’s hard work getting the time off because of the hours we do.

“I enjoy coming down to parkrun, I enjoy the camaraderie, there’s a cracking bunch of people down here and we have a good laugh. We get the regular runners every week and it’s good watching them all go past, I take the mick out of some of them and obviously encourage others, as you do. Volunteering also helps to keep me motivated as I get back into running.

“At the moment I’d say I’m at a medium level of fitness, I’m enjoying getting back into running and have been using the Active Tameside gym membership. I’ve also tried a few of the classes there like circuits, boxercise and tri-swim and it’s really good. I want to keep getting fitter, my main aim is to do a sub-3hr marathon and with the help of Moving Forces, my gym pass and the support of everyone at parkrun, hopefully I can achieve that.

“Long term I’d also like to get into coaching on the running side and would love to work with kids. Moving Forces are also helping me with the coaching qualifications I’ll need to achieve this.”

We’ll continue to follow Paul’s journey over the coming months, as well as the progress of many other Moving Forces members.
