GreaterSport have been privileged to work as partners with Refugee Action and a group of young lads from Somalia. They wanted to get healthy and fit and needed support to understand the opportunities available to them. Along with all the usual barriers to participation, this group had limited English and no knowledge of the local area.

Refugee Action help refugees who’ve survived some of the world’s worst regimes. They get them the basic support they need to live again with dignity. They help them build safe, happy and productive lives in the UK. .

GreaterSport worked with the group to provide bespoke support to empower them to develop their own project, write a Sportivate application and source a coach and facility. The process was welcomed by both Refugee Action and the lads themselves as it helped them to practice learning a new language, gain an insight into how committees and constitutions are formed and developed their self esteem and independence. They have set up a football team called “The Lucky Boyz” This is how they feel and are one of the most grateful and appreciative bunch you can meet.

Both organisations are committed to ongoing community development and taking both a place based and person centred approach has led to its success. Significant mutual learning was achieved.

The lads now intend to get a bit fitter, join the local league and aspire to play in the premiership. We have no doubt they will achieve this!
