Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) is the local government body responsible for delivering Greater Manchester’s transport strategy and commitments.
More than 5.6 million journeys are made across Greater Manchester’s transport network each day.
It’s our job to do everything we can to keep the city-region moving and growing. We’re working hard to make travel easier through a better-connected Greater Manchester. We put the customer first in everything we do to help make travel as safe and simple as possible.
In 2018 Greater Manchester’s Transport Commissioner Chris Boardman, unveiled a plan to revolutionise travel across the city-region, making active travel the number one choice for travelling to work, to school and to the shops. But we can only do this if trips by foot or by cycling are a safe and pleasant experience.
That means we hold ourselves to the highest standards for quality – routes that are fit for a 12-year-old, a double buggy or a wheelchair user. We are delivering fully segregated cycling and walking routes on busy roads (Busy Beeways), quality signage and crossings on quieter routes (Beeways) and creating areas where people are prioritised to make streets safer and quieter.
Encouraging and enabling people to make active and sustainable travel choices is central to Greater Manchester’s vision for a fully integrated, London-style transport system – the ‘Bee Network’.
Delivery has started to accelerate this shift to greener, healthier and more environmentally friendly modes.
The city-region is set to deliver the UK’s largest Cycling and Walking network. Over 100km of new cycling and walking infrastructure is set to be on the ground by the end of 2021 and 500 miles by end of 2025. This will be complemented by the roll out of the new Greater Manchester Bike Hire scheme, launching in November this year.
We’re also expanding and enhancing public transport provision. This means new and improved interchanges, stops and stations, greater Metrolink capacity and accelerating bus franchising so that everyone has access to better buses. These improvements will seamlessly connect with our cycling and walking network – enabling people to travel actively for first/last mile parts of their journey.
Cycle and Stride is an exciting new project providing grants to help people and groups become more active through cycling and walking. The project aims to support up to 60 community groups over three years until 2023.
