GreaterSport’s Moving Forces Programme has been shortlisted for the 2nd year in a row for the 'Mental Health & Wellbeing Award' at the Community Sport and Recreation Awards taking place this evening.

The Sport and Recreation Alliance's first ever online Community Sport and Recreation Awards will celebrate community organisations achievements across 5 categories;

  • Diversity and Inclusion Award
  • Mental Health & Wellbeing Award
  • Resilience in Adversity Award
  • Sustainable Programme Award
  • Youth development award

The Mental Health and Wellbeing Award celebrates clubs/programmes which use the power of sport and recreation to promote and enhance positive wellbeing. They are ambassadors for promoting good health and wellbeing policies. There are three finalists in the category;

Moving Forces launched in Tameside in September 2018 and is now working across Greater Manchester. It has the social and mental benefits of physical activity at the heart of it and helps military veterans, families and serving personnel to stay physically active by providing fun, relaxed and sociable activities online and all over Greater Manchester.

Over 330 veterans, including 295 full members, have engaged with the Moving Forces programme since its launch. The total number of participants (including family members of veterans) is estimated at 500.

Since March 2020 we have also been developing a new mental wellbeing focused strand of the programme called ‘Moving Forces Connect’. We will be launching a digital ‘on demand’ version of the ‘Connect’ programme in the Spring, with a downloadable workbook and access to free online videos to enable people to complete the course in their own time at home.
