Participation

A key GM Moving priority is to widen access and participation in physical activity, sport and active travel to create a greater number of more inclusive ways to be active every day, enabling active lives for all.

With different motivations, capabilities and opportunities to move, we need to do more to tune in to what matters to people. We need to know what people like to do, and the realities of their lives, in order to ensure that everyone in Greater Manchester has the opportunity to move more, in whatever way works for them.

By working together we can ensure that moving, in whatever form, is within easy reach of every person in Greater Manchester. We want everyone to have the opportunity, the inspiration and the freedom to get moving and keep moving.

Our approach

  • Recognise and address inequalities: making active lives easier to access for underserved and underrepresented communities.
  • Nothing about us, without us’: involving people early; co-designing and delivering within their communities.
  • Sustainable skills: Growing a diverse, inclusive workforce to lead and support local change. Developing people to act as catalysts.
  • Think community safety: Improving real and perceived safety in streets, spaces, and places, making them welcoming for all.
  • Evidence-based: Using data to target investment and support that reduces inactivity.
  • Connecting through communication: Using inclusive, relatable language and imagery to show movement is for all.
  • Access to all: Making activities and facilities more open, affordable, and inclusive.
  • Community-centred: Supporting locally owned and led spaces, assets and opportunities to move.
  • Make it easy: Help people easily find what’s on offer in their local area.
  • Digital inclusion: Use digital tools to boost access while addressing digital exclusion.
