What is a School Street?

A school street is a road outside a school with restrictions on motor traffic at school drop off and pick up times. At these times the road becomes a temporary walking, wheeling and cycling zone. School streets create a much safer environment around the school gates, raise the air quality in and around schools and improve health and wellbeing by encouraging families to walk, scoot or cycle to school.

In addition, school streets can benefit children’s learning as travelling actively to school is linked to improved mood and increased concentration. School streets are run by volunteers; often these include parents/grandparents, residents, councillors and members of the community who want to support the scheme.

Trafford has five existing schemes with a sixth one about to be launched at the end of September. There is also funding secured for the delivery of two more by the end of July 2026.

All our schemes are currently led by our amazing School Street volunteers and one of the main responsibilities of this role will be to recruit, induct, support and coordinate volunteers. You will also support with other aspects such as data collection, monitoring, delivering fun and engaging events as well as supporting wider walking, wheeling and cycling initiatives.

In this role you will:

  • Support with the recruitment, induction, retention and co-ordination of school street volunteers.
  • Work with communities in and around the identified schools to create strong, sustainable School Streets.
  • Assist with monitoring the impact of School Streets, for example carrying out surveys and collecting traffic data.
  • Support with wider walking, wheeling and cycling initiatives as required.
