As part of this week's celebration week we take a look at Bury's first parkrun, which was launched in September.
Clarence Runners are a running group who run every Thursday evening from Clarence Park in Bury, the group hosts two different groups, one group called the Jeffers who run on and off for 30 second intervals (beginners) then another group who tend to run between a 5k-8k route each week.
The leader of the group, Nick, had regularly been approached by local runners and residents to express their interest and desire for a parkrun to be held in their local park.
Nick did all his groundwork with parkrun, with mapping out a safe and appropriate route, recruited volunteers and secured funding from Bury’s Place Partner Investment to secure an ongoing partnership with parkrun.
Clarence Park held Bury’s first parkrun on the 23rd September and has a regular attendance of 160 people all runners, joggers and walkers.
After the first event Nick told the Bury Times; “It was amazing, we had 250 people turning up to run and walk as well as 30 volunteers.
“It went amazingly well, and we were really lucky with the weather, everyone loved it.”
