Today sees the launch of a new toolkit designed to help people get out on a short walk each day in their local community. The GM Daily Mile Toolkit is bursting with tips, tools and motivational ideas to help adults and families walk more, outside of school settings. It aims to support people to do a Daily Mile however and wherever suits them with three tailor-made versions: an Individual and Family Toolkit, a Toolkit for Employers and a Community Organisation Toolkit.

The Individual and Family Toolkit supports people to take their first step towards a Daily Mile walk from home, either alone or with others.

The Employers and Workplace Toolkit supports employers to encourage and enable employees to take a short walk each day to help employees connect and enhance their wellbeing.

The Community Organisation Toolkit is designed for local groups, organisations and service providers to support them to build a Daily Mile into their work with local communities.

With resources including activity sheets, step trackers, challenges, promotion templates and much more, there is something to support everyone to walk more.

The Toolkit, developed by GM Walking in collaboration with local communities and employers, is an exciting next step toward Greater Manchester’s ambition to be world’s first Daily Mile City-Region. Following January’s milestone achievement of 500 primary schools signed up to The Daily Mile, the creation of this toolkit now aims to grow The GM Daily Mile even further; taking it into homes, communities and workplaces across the city-region.

Hayley Lever, GM Moving Executive Lead and CEO of GreaterSport, said ‘This toolkit provides support for residents and employees all over Greater Manchester to use a short Daily Mile walk as a simple way to move more – wherever they are. This will further the GM Moving vision for 75% of the Greater Manchester population to be active or fairly active by 2025.’

Elaine Wylie MBE, Founder of The Daily Mile Foundation went on to say ‘We know that The Daily Mile in primary schools is doing wonders for our children’s health, fitness, concentration and wellbeing. The development of this toolkit to help adults gain these benefits through a GM Daily Mile walk from home, work or in their community, is very exciting. We look forward to continuing our close partnership with Greater Manchester and GM Moving to help make a difference to the health and wellbeing of people of all ages.’

Andy Burnham, Mayor of Greater Manchester added: “Being able to provide tangible support for our residents, communities and workplaces through the GM Daily Mile Toolkit, is an exciting next step in our ambition to be the world’s first Daily Mile City-Region.

“Exercise is not only good for our physical health, but also has major mental health benefits – especially during these difficult times. I know that sometimes it can feel daunting to try to get outside and get moving more, so hopefully this new resource will help to enable more people to feel confident in getting out and walking each day in their local area.”
