Activity Levels Among Rochdale's Children & Young People

46.9% of children in Rochdale are now achieving an average of 60 minutes of physical activity a day, however, over six in ten young people in Rochdale are not achieving this which is particularly concerning. However, since the last survey Rochdale has seen a significant decrease of 13.3% in the percentage averaging less than 30 minutes of physical activity a day. This has helped contribute to Rochdale's position above the Greater Manchester average for those achieving 60 minutes a day,

These figures are important as in Rochdale:

38.2% of children finish primary school as either overweight or obese, we know that physical activity has a role to play in these figures and this was highlighted by the Chief Medical Officer with active travel and physical activity being highlighted as approaches to tackle childhood obesity.

40% of children are classified as living in poverty in Rochdale (after housing costs) according to End Child Poverty, compared to 30% nationally. The Active Lives Survey shows us that those young people from less affluent households are more likely to be less active.
