Wigan Adult Activity Level May 2019/20

The latest Active Lives results published by Sport England shows that 70.1% of adults in Wigan are active for at least 30 minutes a week, this equates to 187,100 adults moving. This is an increase of 1,000 from the survey 12 months ago.

The latest Active Lives Release, May 2019/20, has seen an increase (0.1%) in the inactive population in Wigan in the last 12 months. Wigan has seen the percentage of people moving, active for at least 30 minutes a week, increase by 2.7% since Active Lives began (November 2015/16), in comparison Greater Manchester as a whole has increased the moving population by 0.5% in the same time period.

When this latest release is combined with activity data on children and young people, 214,900 Wigan residents are moving.

Inactivity Across Demographics

The largest inactivity gap amongst adults in Wigan is the age gap with a 32.6% gap, the smallest is the gender gap with a 8.4% gap.

0.5% gender gap decrease since Nov 15/16

The inactivity gender gap in Wigan is 8.4%. This change is due to a larger decrease in inactivity amongst women (-2.6%) than men (-2.1%).

2.4% socio-economic gap increase since Nov 15/16

The inactivity socio-economic gap in Wigan is 19.4%. This is a result of a larger decrease in inactivity amongst higher social groups (-6.1%) than in lower social groups (-3.7%).

12.8% age gap decrease since Nov 15/16

The inactivity age gap in Wigan is 32.6%. This change is due to a decrease in inactivity amongst over 75's (-10.1%) and an increase in inactivity amongst 16 to 34 year olds (+2.7%).

1.6% disability gap increase since Nov 15/16

The inactivity disability gap in Wigan is 25.0%. This change is due to a larger decrease in inactivity amongst those with no long term limiting disabilities (-4.7%) than those with a long term limiting disability (-3.1%).

Overall, inactivity in Wigan is highest amongst the over 75's (55.6%), those with a long term limiting disability (48.5%) and people who are retired (39.3%). The lowest levels of inactivity are amongst higher social groups (18.5%), 16 to 34 year olds (23.0%) and those with no long term limiting disability (23.5%).
